What would you pay for television? (Poll)
More and more I hear people talking about and read people online television shows that have not aired anywhere in Britain or Ireland or are not available at the time they mention them. It’s apparent to me that many, many people are streaming television shows, downloading television shows or using virtual private networks to bypass geo-blocking. I’m not going to get into the rights and wrongs of this but I am curious to know whether people would be happy to actually pay for television if they could get what they pleased when they wanted it online. I’m obviously not the only one thinking about this as BBC kind of announce that they plan to make their iPlayer content available internationally for a fee. I’d pay for it, would you? Of course, if iTunes would please sort out the licensing for purchasing television programmes in iTunes this question would be moot…

If I had access to ‘whatever I want, whenever I want’ from shows across the world (UK, US especially) I’d pay a good bit.

I completely agree with you, Ann. I’m very excited about the possibility of the iPlayer going international. I’ve just spent the evening watching the Inbetweeners on 4OD and I’d sooner upgrade my broadband if more networks made their content available. I think RTÉ should seriously consider making the Player available like this. I wonder could it generate as much revenue as the licence fee?
You know what drives me mad though? I follow a lot of TV shows on Facebook and they often post snippets and even these previews are geo-blocked! It is some pain.
