I don’t agree on this. Bodybuilding is definitly about aesthetics! Of course it depends on the goal, but all successful models do build their body or workout

I disagree. Bodybuilding is about power, strength and machismo. It’s not about looking beautiful – because it could be argued that nobody does – but it’s about power. For a woman to be a successful bodybuilder, she pretty much has to discard all semblance of femininity; many female bodybuilders don’t have periods and have higher levels of testosterone than estrogen, making them hormonally closer to men than to women. For a woman to become successful in many of these “macho” fields, she has to effectively be a tomboy – a term I have serious issues with anyway. I doubt there are many female bodybuilders who would, for example, describe themselves as “girly” girls. You’ll often find sporty women saying they’re not “girly”, or that they do things “like a man” – implying that doing things like a woman isn’t good enough.

To be fair, there are several examples you could come up with to show men being valued for their aesthetics. Modelling maybe – but that is a career based only on aesthetics, not gender-specifically.

What about bodybuilding? that’s pretty much about aesthetics, and more of a guy thing.

Stewart, no, it wouldn’t. Snooker is a sport, which is one on the basis of skill. Beauty pageantry is a pageant, won on the basis of aesthetics and ability not to make un-PC remarks in the style of Miss Teen South Carolina 2007. And perhaps we don’t see women “taking snooker seriously” because, like almost all competitive sports, women aren’t taken seriously as competitors. Throughout history, almost every sport has started off with men only and has then started accepting women.

Or maybe it’s just because snooker takes so long, and women are too busy cooking dinner and making babies – oh, and wishing for world peace while doing sit-ups. Yes, beauty pageantry is definitely for women.

Wouldn’t Snooker be the male equivalent of a female beauty pagent? They take it really seriously and there’s lots of bending and dressing up. Plus it’s something you don’t see women taking seriously.
